TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION.

The number of manual and technical classes in New Zealand at the end of the year was 2227, of which 1247 were established during tho year. Of the total number, 1659 are classes for handiwork in connection with primary and secondary schools. Cookery for girls and woodwork for boys are receiving most attention, there being now 181 cookery classes and 100 woodwork classes. Technical classes proper had been held in forty towns, compared with 35 in the previous year, and the voluntary contributions made to technical classes during 1903, on which subsidies are paid by the Government, amounted to nearly three times as much as the previous year. A fair number of pupils are now receiving free technical instruction.
