RECENT FIRE AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
(By Telegraph — Pvess Association), Palmerston N., This Day.
An enquiry wag held, yesterday, into the circumstances attending the recent fire which destroyed the Clarendon Hotel. Exhaustive evidence was called, which occupied all day. The jury found that the fire commenced in H. Hopkins' billiard-room, and that whilst the circumstances surrounding the outbreak are suspicious, there was no direct evidence to show 4iow the fire originated. Biders were added that had the usual water-supply been available the fire would have been extinguished in its early stages; and that insurance agents should exercise care in taking risks, and except in exceptional cases no proposal should be accepted for more than twothirds of the value of the property.
