PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN MASTERTON.
The Official Recommendations.
The Committee appointed by the Masterton Borough Council to inspect publio buildings in Masterton, and report as to their safety or otherwise, met last evening. The Mayor (Mr ,T. M. Coradine) presided, and Crs McEwen, Eton, and the Borough Engineer were also present. The following recommendations were drawn up, and will be submitted to the Council at the next ordinary meeting :—
TOWN HALL. That the following alterations bo compulsory : That an exit be provided in the western wall of the auditorium ; that a water supply bo provided, with several fixed hydrants, one outstde the stage door, one on the stage, two with hose and nozzles attached on either side of the proscenium opening accessible from the body of the hall; that, as there is not a brick proscenium wall, a two-inch water piping be placed across the stage side of the proscenium, in the roof, perforated so as to deluge the stage, to be worked either from the outside of the building, or some distance from the stage if inside; that boards, scrim and paper be taken off from the front staircase wall, and metal lathee and plaster substituted; that alley ways be lefc open throughout at the sides and centre of the stalls; that the exit openings hare the words " fire escape " painted on them, and that they be thrown open at the close of every entertainment for exit; that the Trustees be advised to provide some better means of ventilation. CHURCHES.
That in all cases stops and springs be fixed at the bottom of the doors so as to keep them open ; that St. Matthew's vestry be asked to provide one or two extra doors opening outwards; that the Wesloyan Trustees be asked to provide a door in the eastern wall of the Church-opening into Chapel-street (regarding the attached schoolroom, if it is let, it is advisable to put a door opening jo Hall-street); that the managers of the Presbyterian Church be asked to provide a door in the infants' room, to communicate with the outside, or a window opening to the outside (the Committee were not satisfied as to the means of egress from this church, but in the circumstances, as a new church is to be built shortly, they recommend that no alteration be insisted on at present); that regarding St. Patrick's Church, the Committee express themselves satisfied with the provision made for egress and ventilation ; that regarding the Salvation Army Barracks, the Committee are also satisfied with the means of exit and ventilation.
