Despite heavy rain falling, about 25 of the Pahiatua Mounted Corps, and representatives of the Masonic and Foresters Lodges, left at eight o'clock on Sunday morning, in four drags, to attend the funeral of the late Mr W. Medhurst. His mortal remains were laid to rest in the Dannevirke Cemetery. The pall-bearers wore six non-commissioned officers from the Pahiatua and Buahine Rifles. The deceased's horse was led behind the hearse, the coffin boing opvered with the Union Jack. The funeral service was read by Captain Bolton, and Mr W. H. Hawkins read the Foresters' Bervice. A very large number of mourners were present. Tho Dannevirke Band played the "Dead March," and a squad of the Pahiatua Mounted Rifles formed the firing party. In St. Peter's Church, in the evening, the Rev. Hugh S. Leach made a touching allusion to the deceased, who was a member of the Church. Out of respect for his memory, Miss Falconer played the "Dead March in Saul" at the conclusion of the service. Owing to tho continuous heavy rain, the rivers and creeks are " up," and all lowlying ground is flooded.
