WOODVILLE NEWS.
(/' Rom Our Own Correspondent.) At the recent ceremony at tho Woodville Main School, arranged by the headmaster, Mr Stevenson, His Worship the Mayor, (Mr H. Burnett) presented the silver medals won by a squad from the scliool in charge of Scrgt. Holder. The Dux Prize, a gold Maltese Cross, waß won by Ira Dobbie, son of our popular statioumaster. This prize is presented annually by the Mayor of the town. Judging by result3,'the success of the pupil teachers, the number of scholarships won and tho excellent reports received from the Inspector, we are indeed W" fortunate in possessing such an able headmaster and such an up-to-date staff. The Catholic members of our community held their annual social in the Drill Hall on Thursday evening, and a most successful affair it was. Mr Brosmaham, hon.sec, aud Bey. T. McKenna have taught us to look forward to a real good programme for their social, and we wero not disappointed. The singing of Misses Oakley and Bush, of Palmerston North, pupils of the Convent there, was a real treat. The other items were good, and the supper was all that could be desired. Tho dancers one and all confess to having had "a good time." The Rev. T. McKenna is a great favourito with all denominations, and on rising to return thanks received quite an ovation. He made special referenoe to the kindness of the Woodville Rifles in allowing their decorations to remain in place for the social that ovening, and aseted the representatives of the Press to please take note. The weather here is cold, with drizzling rain, and does not promise well for the Hunt Club's Steeplechase to-morrow. Mrs O'Meara leaves on a visit to her father in Greymouth on the 25th inst.
