It is reported that as the old Newtown licenses nominally expired on June 30th, tho police, in view of possible prosecutions for selling liquor without licenses, visited each of the hotels and then purchased liquor therein, and otherwise obtained evidence that may be necessary 1 It would be interesting to know how much liquor the police purchased, and what they did with it ? The police, after all, are only human; and, if it be part of their duties to buy alcoholic stimulants — and possibly to consume them, how is the morale of the force to be maintained. It would be far better if Inspectors of Hotels wero appointed outside the police altogether. It is not fair to the police to have work of this kind thrust upon them, or to be compelled to mako domiciliary visits to public houses. In past years many members of the police force Were notorious as " tanks "; things are on a better footing now—but we should be sorry to see them drifting back on to the old lines.
