WQODVILLE NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
The recent stormy weather has been succeeded by frosts and fine days. Talking of weather, there baa been a breeze in our Borough Council. A Cemetery account was presented for payment to which Cr. Itedwood had affixed a " tag." Ho had visited the cemetery and found it no better than before the supposed work had been done. As there was a special committee elected from the Council to look after the grounds etc., Councillor Eedwood, after a lot of patient battling, succeeded in obtaining an admission to the effect that the said committee had never inspected the work. Some rather heated conversation was indulged in before our painstaking Councillor prevented the payment being passed until the Cemetery Committee agreed to view the supposed work. They did so during the week, and found ample to warrant Cr. Redwood's determined action.
That payments for work done in connection with local bodies should be made in a perfunctory manner, makes ratepayers very thankful to find a careful, energetic man like Cr. Itedwood has proved himself to be since his election to the Borough Council, some two years ago. The Woodville Jockey Club have decided to make extensive alterations to their ground and buildings, including the purchase of some of Mr Manisty's land, to straighten the course. More than sufficient Seventh Standard pupils have remained in at the Main School in anticipation of a District High School being established. The Committee are fixing up final matters in connection with the above.
The appointment of Mr O'Meara, M.H.8., as Government " whip," should prove as popular in the House as it is in his own constituency. The elevation of the Hon. T. Kennedy Macdonald is one of the most popular made by the Government for many years. The Hod. gentleman is regarded as a strong, broadminded politician possessing true Liberal views.
The Messrs Cole Bros., of Onga Onga, who have done a lot of work in this district during the past year, are about to erect new offices for the County Council, on the section acquired by them some months ago. The carnival in aid of the Anglican Church funds, is to be repeated on July Bth. Miss Grant is hard at work training the children in some new dances. Mesdames Nelson and E. R. Rhodes havo been very successful in collecting funds for the " Church Society of the Diocese in Waipu," and the parish of Woodville will benefit thereby.
Mr Isaacs, the Technical Inspector, was up last week assisting the School Committee to arrange for the establishment of Technical classes.
The motion to close at 5.30 p.m. on winter evenings has been agreed to by the majority of the townspeople. It seems absurd to keep open longer, as only a stray customer comes along after 5 p.m. Messrs Kenny, J,P., and Foster Brooke waited on those who were not present an the meeting called for Friday to consider the question.
