A Nuisance.

] [to thk editor.l j Su.:,—For two or three days the fragrant carcase of a largo dead sheep lay on '. tho Akurn-road, within the Borough- a j menace to public health and a serious ; peril to persons driving or riding past. .On Sunday, the smell was dreadful, and ' contaminated the air for a radius of fully thirty yards. Is it the custom here to . leave such offensive and malodorous , objects on public thoroughfares till they disappear by slow degrees; or is it the , duty of the Borough officials to see to ■ their removal ? Tho particular cause of , complaint referred to was brought under ! the notico of tho Borough authorities, , but tho reply was that " they could do nothing." Well, Sir, all I can say is that ] this stnto of tilings should be remedied — and forthwith. The Borough authorities \ should havo power " to do something," iin a case of this kind ; and it is rather a i reflection on the local authority that ' their servants are powerless. There was ! recently an outcry about tho temporary fever hospital, located in Hope-street, which was not anything like—in my opinion—such a direct menace to public health, life aud limb us the dead carcase of a big sheep lying day after clay beside a public thoroughfare in a populous borough with constant traffic hack and forward. I hope, Sir, that the Borough Council, in its wisdom, will empower its officials, by by-law, or otherwise, " to do something" in a caso such as I have stated. It is a very important matter — moro especially iv these days of sanitary ' development, anel is deserving of public attention.—l am, etc.. 9th March. Dio<;___s.
