POPE LEO XIII.

The Silver Jubilee of His

Pontificate,

(Received 'To-day, at 1.10 a.m.)

lvoJiu, March 4

The twenty-fifth anniversary of His Holiness the Popo's enthronement was celebrated to-day. KcclcsiaslicH from all parts of tho world ami seventy thousand pooplo took part in the sorvico in tho Basilica. Tho Pope was in good health, but looked pale, and his voice was marked by hoarsoncss as ho intoned the To Deum. Peals of bells woro rung in '193 churches.

Cardinal Gibbons, on behalf of tho Aniorican hierarchy of clergy and laity, sent a Marconi message from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to Cornwall, for transmission to Rome, convoying congratula-

tions to the Pope,

[Popo lieo XIII. has completed the 25th yoau of his Pontificate. Only once before in tho long lino of Popes has this term been exceeded, and that was in the caso of Loo XlU.'s inmiediato predecessor. Pius IX. was elected to tho papal throne in 1840, and ho ruled till 1878, a period of ii' 2 years, lie was in the vigour of his manhood, 54 years old, when he became Pope, but his successor had nearly reached the ago allotted by the Psalmist when tho choice of tho cardinals fell upon him. It may safely bo assumed that nobody could ha\ c reasonably hoped on February 20th, 1878, that tho frail old man would live to see the nineteenth century out and to continuo in tho now century, with all his mental faculties unimpaired, in tho work of governing tho great religious community of which ho is tho head. On the 2nd of this month ho completed tho 93rd year of his age, and recent visitors to Rome report that, to all appearances, ho is good to become a centenarian. Nor docs this end the notable list of anniversaries to be celebrated by the Pope this month. In the same month, GO years will have elapsed sinco he was consecrated a bishop, and thus wo have tho unique spectacle of a Popo celebrating, within a month's space, his Wird birthday, his diamond jubileo as Bishop, and his silver jubilee us Pope.]
