[by the seer.] --^, The Wairarapa Racing Club hold there meeting on Now Year's Day, and are suro to bo as highly successful as usual. The acceptances are good, and owners show their appreciation of this go-ahead Club in a material manner. I will venture to anticipate the judge's verdict with tho following suggestions:— Flying.—Opaeae and Shrapnel Shell. First Hack Hurdles. —Turanganui and Boko. Flying Hack.—Rawiri and Bounce. Wairarapa Cup.—Volley and Benefactor. Rimutaka Hack.—Wehenga and Raema. Grandstand Welter.—Oudenarde and Gipsy Jack. Hack Welter.—Rawiri and Cumulus. Levanter is still equal to carrying silk in the Old Country. A London cablegram to hand states that the veteran son of Captivator and Steel All acted as runner-up in a steeplechase run at Windsor on Saturday last. Poor old Coronet's racing career can now safely be said to have terminated with his effort in the Auckland Cup. After making the pace for nearly a mile and a-half, he lasted it out until passing the post in fourth place, when he snapped a bone in one of his forelegs. As was pretty widely anticipated, Siege Gun got through successfully fljft his Auckland Cup errand, but it caingt truthfully bo said that a very great amount of credit attached to the feat. The opposition was unquestionably weak, and, as a veteran hurdler in the shape of Mars was within a length of the son of Hotchkiss at the finish, the performance does not come out well when analysed critically. However, this much can be said for Siege Gun—he displayed a true dash of gameness. Hewitt started to work on him fully seven furlongs from bouie, his chance did not look any too rosy, and when he commenced to roll about in tho last couple of hundred yards of the journey when he had got into the lead ho still loft room for some anxiety with regard to the result. If there had been a real good-un in the Cup field, it ' may be doubted if Siege Gun would have achieved the distinction that fell to him. A moderate in a bad year reads like an apt summing up of the position re Siege Gun's Cup. ■

The poor quality of the field that contested the Auckland Cijp this year has formed the subject of not a little comment, "and once again the suggestion is being put forward that the distance of the race should, bo reduced. There are some who would not hesitate to lop half-a-mile off the Cup.distance straight away, so pronounced "are they in their belief that such action would bear out their views as to bringing about a bMJfrr, race. The Queensland Turf Club Brisbane, has taken a stand against those trainers and jockeys who hang around the course all day if they think there is any chance of a gallop being brought off, and in future any jockey or trainer found on the course after 11 a.m., without permission of the secretary will risk his license. As this action was'taken owing to the complaints of owners that they could not bring off a private gallop on the course, it is evident that in Brisbane, as eleewhere, owners have more to feaj: from trainers and jockeys than from newspaper men. Mr Stead supplied the winner of the Auckland Cup and Bailway Handicap last year with St. Michael and Cruciform, and this year the Canterbury sportsman annexed the same double with Siege Gun and Orloff.
