PAHIATUA NEWS.

[By Telegraph—Special toD aily Times), Pahiatua, This Day.

A horso belonging to Mr Ross, butcher, was harnessed up ready for being put into the cart, yesterday, when suddenly

it broke away, running up the main street. It crossed the road, ran along the footpath, crossed again, and fell just in front of C. H. Taylor's bicycle shop, but was quickly on its feet again, then ran for 100 yards on the footpath in the busiest part of the town. It was eventually turned into the Club Hotel yard. It was a wonder no one was hurt, or any windows broken, or damage done, as the traces were flying loose.

Tho annual meeting of the Jockey Club was held on Tuesday evening, in the supper room of the Olympic Theatre. Mr Ormond Cooper, President of Club, occupied the chair. There was a large attendance of members. Tho report and balance-sheet were read and adopted; the assets showed £700 over and abovo tho liabilities. The profit on tho last meeting was £600. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr O. Cooper (reelected) ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs S. Bolton and T. Quirkc; Stewards, Messrs A. McFarlano, It. Smith, W. W. McArdle, G. Eaton, G. B. Blade, W. Husband, C. Avory, E. B. Hare, E. Sullivan. Starter, Mr H. Piper (re-elected). ITandicappor, Mr Henrys (re-elected). Auditors, Messrs Miller and Cross.

A hearty vote of thanks brought the meeting to a closo. I regret to say that Mr W. Mitchell (manager for Messrs Rouse and Hurroll) who had a paralytic stroke on Sunday morning, 17th, passed away on Monday evening 25th. The body was taken to Wellington, on Wednesday, for interment. He leaves a widow and grown up family to mourn their loss.

The Coronation Committee meeting called for Tuesday night lapsed for want? of a quorum. The expenses in connection with the same amount to about •650.

Tho weather is still very unsettled, but there arc indications of an earlyspring. In sheltered places fruit trees are in blossom.
