The Unimproved Value.
[to the editor.]
Sir, —Last year I paid the Masterton Borough Council six pounds for general and water-rates. This was on the old system, the rate charged being Is Id in the £. In the meantime a poll to rate on unimproved values was carried, and I have received tho demand notices for this year from the Council. Notwithstanding that my property is highly improved the valuation has "jumped up " to such an exorbitant extent that I am actually called upon to pay more this year on tho rating of the unimproved value at 2d in the £, than I paid last year on the old rate of Is Id in the £, the total amount for this year on tho place being six pounds ton shillings.—l am, etc., Disgusted Ratepayer. P.S. —Since writing the above, I have got another rate notice —what on earth for, I don't know—special rato of ;ld in the £, for something or other.
