Useful Hints for Housekeepers.
To Clean a Frying-pan: To clean a frying-pan that has been used for fish rub well with hot salt, and tho smell will disappear. To Prevent Jam Moulding: Pour a few drops of pure glycerine on the top of each jar before covering. This is a certain preventative. To Clean Tinware: Wash it with hot water and soap, and then, after drying, polish it with dried Hour, using a piece of old newspaper as a polishing cloth. Zinc: Zinc may be quickly cleaned by first washing it with warm soapsuds, wiping dry, and then rubbing thoroughly with a cloth dipped in paratfin, and polishing till tho whole surface shines. Mirrors: To clean mirrors wet the surface of the glass with gin, to remove the stains. Then rub with a cloth dipped in powdered blue. Polish with a silk handkerchief. Bo careful not to touch the frames. Dusting: In dusting skirting boards and under beds etc., a more effectual result will bo obtained by using a duster wrung out in water instead of the ordinary dry duster, as the dust adheres to the damp duster and docs not blow over the floor. To Wash Madras Curtains : Beat and shake out the dust, and then wash in bran water. Boil a quantity of bran in a bucket of water, strain, and put curtains in while moderately warm; rinse in bran water and hang up in the shade to dry. Press on the wrong side with a cool iron.
To Imitate Maple wood : Wash the article with a brush or piece of rag lixed on a stick, aud dipped in aquafortis. As soon as it has been partially brushed over hold the article to the fire; it will becomo yellow in a few minutes. Then brush it over with copal varnish, and leavo it to dry in tho sun or open air; two or three coats completely till tho pores of tho wood; then rub it gently with a piece of smooth pumice-stone, and givo it another coat or two, letting it completely dry between each application ; then polish again very gently, and finish off with flour and a soft rag.
