JOHNSTON-STREET.
Borough Council Decided to Widen it. The committee appointed by the Masterton Borough Council to deal with the question of widening Johnston-street, reported to last night's meeting that the majority of owners had signed an agreement to give the required land, and it was recommended that the remainder be taken under the Public Works Act. In effect, the agreement signed was that 16ft. Gin. be given on each side of the road free of compensation, the Council to defray all expenses in connection with transferring the land, removing and reerecting fences on the new boundary, to provide a water supply where a natural water supply now existing is damaged, and to form"and construct a footpath on the south side of Johnston-street from Coloinbo-road-to Nursery-road. The Mayor mentioned that all they required to do was to adopt the report, but the question of carrying out the work was one of finance. Cr Renall enlarged on the necessity for the widening of the street, and expressed a hope that the Finance Committee would sco its way clear to raise requisite funds for the work. It was decided to proceed with the work. ____________
