MASTERTON S.M. COURT.
Yearly Returns,
The returns of the business transacted at the Masterton S.M, Court during the year 1901, as compiled by Ml- E. Rawson, Clerk of the Court, show that the aggregate amount sued for was <£341iJ 3s, and tho aggregate amount recovered was J2169G 13s lOd. The number of plaints entered was 397, and 214 were tried. There was one case iv which Maoris only were concerned and fifteen in which Europeans were plaintiffs and Maoi-is the defendants. There were 102 Old Ago Pension applications and 13 miscellaneous applications. During the period 359 (834 males and 25 females) were brought before the Court. Of these, 50 males and 7 females were discharged ; 5 males and 3 females were dismissed on the merits ; 5 males and one female were committed for trial ; 188 males and 7 females were summarily convicted ; 127 males and G females paid fines; 27 males and 1 female, imprisonment for non-payment; 32 males peremptory imprisonment; 1 male whipped ; 45 maics and two females were convicted and discharged ; and 41 and 5 orders made against males and females respectively. There were 25 cases of assault, 29 of theft, 11 of damage to property, 129 of drunkenness, 12 of indecent language,;) of indecent exposure, 9 of lunacy, 18 failing to attend school, and 7 broaches of by-laws. In all 29 prohibition orders (26 males and 3 females) were issued, and 4 separation orders.
