RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

A Train Runs Into a Trap.

Two Men Seriously Injured.

(By Telegraph — Press Association).

Napier, This Day,

A serious accident occurred on Saturday evening as the 5 p.m. train from Hastings to Napier was travelling between Hastings and Tomoana. About half-way between tho two places thcro is a private crossing, which is protected by a gate on oaeh side of tho line. As tho train approached this spot, a light gig, in which wero two men named Thompson and Lourdon, and a boy, attempted to cross the line, with the result that the train crashed into the vehicle, smashing tho gig, killing the horse, and injuring tho men rather severely. The boy escaped with slight bruises.

The train was at once stopped and tho injured men brought to town and taken to tho hospital, where it was found that Thompson was suffering from a fractured thigh and Lourdon from severe bruises on tho chest. It is not anticipated, however, that any serious results will occur.

The two men are butchers,

It is difficult to understand how the accident can have happened, unless through carelessness on the men's part or from tho horse becoming frightened and jibbing, for tho line, at the spot tho accident took place, is quito straight, and the approach of the train can be scon a long way off.

The railway authorities rendered every possible assistance, and the men were made as comfortable as thoy could bo under the circumstances.
