MASTERTON TOWN CLOCK.

A letter was received at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council from tho Department, acknowledging the receipt of the Council's ' cheque ol JSIOO (or tho Town Clock, but stating that the contracted price for the clock was £i2ii, and requesting thai a cheque (or tho balance .tC'2 10s he forwarded, Cr CoraiVne staled that the Council had evidently been misled as regards the price of the clock. Cr Ilollings: Surely a clock can be purchased for .£GOO. _ The Clerk stated that Mr Daniell was f' formed by the Premier, in Ihe presence Mr A. W. Hogg, that if .CilOO was ' subscribed it would bo subsidised on the £ for £ basis, and a clock secured for iCGOO. Thai was distinctly understood.

They were only asked to subscribe .£3OO which thcy'lmd done, and if the additional sum hud to be collected, it would be n difficult task, ns residents had too many objects to subscribe to. Cr Hollings moved that the Clerk write to the Department, statin" that it was distinctly understood that Masferlon would only have to subscribe #IOO towards the clock. The Clerk mentioned that the extra cost in price was attributed to having the clock made in the Colony, to which the Premier objected ns the clocks could be made cheaper outside the Colony. Other Councillors spoke strongly regarding the matter. Cr Hollings motion was carried,
