The second annual show of the Wnirnrnpa Poultry Pigeon and Dog Association is being held to-day under circumstances entirely favourable, save in ono respect, nml that is the weather. Hut lately, Mnslerlon people have had ample opportunity to become inured to bad rather, in foot, even to like it, so it is anticipated that thc>lcincuts will not affect the attendanco a great deal this evening. A stranger entering the Drill Hall, where tho poultry and pigeons are on view, would have some difficulty in imaging that it is-* 1 only tho Association's second show, The rows of pen, containing for the most pait, splcnd'd specimens of various breeds, eve sufficient to chniiii the eye, and to cause the person who is not a poultry fancier to enthuse. Compared with last year's Show—which by the wny far eclipsed nil anticipations—the present one is far beyond it in excellence, The total entries, inclusive of dogs, reach the satisfa'tory number of 511. The poultry dM» are nearly twice as numerous as were last year, and in this section, one would naturally wish to liml the strongest feature of the Show.

Poultry have always paid the farmer, but' now, owing to a comb ;, mtioii of circumstances, and the efforts of the Department of Agriculture to bir'd up nn export trade, they arc ft very vnluablo r by-product of the {aim. As a matter of 4" ' fact, they have ceased to be a by-product, ' for pou'try fanning is, now, more than '' ever a rccoguiscd branch of agriculture, 1 one, i'ldeed, that the settler can solely 1 devote himself to, and make "good money." However, with the advent of an export trade, a change in favourite birds must be looked for. If, wo were inclined to he " critical" in regard to the show under notice, it woi'hl be to the extent of saying that in "cxpoit" birds there was a weakness, which, it is • to be hoped will be absent on He future f occasions. In the course of a convcr- , sation with a poultry expert—a stranger to Mastcrton—the \VairaI hai'a Daily Timks representative ' asked, " "NVnnt is your opinion of the • Show, remembering, of course, that the Association is nt present in its infancy ?" . " The Show as a whole," was fie reply, , "is very good no doubt, The jfc'<ton is the coming fowl, I one does not sec much of him here. There is, certainly, in some classes a good show of (his breed. But, then lie has not been long in the restrict—two years, I should say at the outside." Chatting further, the remark was made to our representative that people got the idea into their heads. Hint Leghorn and Minorca were good lay !, ig birds, but that was not enough. A bird that was not a good table bird as well, must bo regarded as falling short of the present rcqu;*ements of the trade. The Orpington and Wyandotte could give points to the breeds mentioned, AsalayerthcOrpington could not be beaten, and as an export bird, tho bird was even far more valuable. " I have been killing cockrels, Orpingtons," remarked a visitor to the Show th's V morning, "straight from the yard—just picking them out anyhow—that weighed 4]lbs," Then another point was urged in favour of the Orphgton, and that was <[ the" brooding" hens were taken away from the nest for two or three days, they soon layed again, alter sucti'treatment. In Minorcas there was a more numerous display than of any breed represented—lß cockerels and 23 pr'Ms, The iif :, iorc« is noted as being iAjjnc'lu' layer. Exhibitors of poultry afflPWssrs A. C. Elkins, L. H. liayncr, 11. Brley, W. Cragg, Geo, Hyde, L, J. Hooper, J, C, Sykes, H. E.Bawson, H.Madelcy, It, E. Jjnnivstcr, W. H. Euick, E. Do Latotir, G. llciniiigion, H, Remington, H. Aylesbury and Pckio, however, appear to bo favourite breeds, which is no doubt partly duo to thc ! v bcautidil

white colour, The experience and opi'.'iou of« duck breeder, at the Show this mining wore given ns follows;-? "I used to have (ho finest class qf l'ckins that you could get, but I havebred liouens for about inc tq ten years, nnd there is nothing to equal tlicin,"

The pigeons arc a section of tljiflkow that w :l l meet with very general lion. Valuable birds arc shown by Messrs L, J, Hooper, AY. Hounslow, H, Madelcy, W. Bailey, H. Fuller, L, J, Carmine, J. D, Dyke, D, Hntlmway and 11, Picmiugton, The dogs—a splendid lot—are on show in the Druid's Hall, which is undoubtedly too sinall a build'iig for (he number being shown, Among the cr'pbitqrs aro -Messrs W, C, Welcl), E, Welch, G, Welch, W, McKcnzic, Jolm Bannister, J. The judging commenced at an early hour this morning, and was nearly concluded at two o'clock, but too late for publication to-day, To-morrow the complete prize list will appear, and a further reference to the different sections of tho Show.

The officers of the Association have every reason to feel proud of the success

that lias itltcmlcil thcircffoiis. Thc?jgpcintionisoncthat deserves but it is not possible to secure tlicifflfet of the general public without performing n grant dual of hard work, and this the officers must have done, for the interest of the public in the Poultry Association of the Wairarapa is of a very real character. However, successful as the present Show undoubted' is,,nowthat a til iii footing Ims been secured, it may be depended upon that future Shows will far eclipse the present, Indeed, there is no reason at all why the Wa'"arapa Association should not bo one of the lending poultry asociations in the Colony, Owing to (he exceedingly unfavourable weather prevailing ycstcrda-Yjilio pigeon Hying competition from Kaitoko was postponed imt : ' to-morrow.
