THE GRAY BENEFIT CONCERT.

Tlio benefit concert organised on behalf of the widow and family of llio late Mr G-. J. Gray was licld in tho Masterton Drill Hall Inst evening, and was well attended, The programme was a long and varied one, and although the acoustic properties of tlie ball are by no means perfect, tlie several items were greatly appreciated by the audience. Owing to (lie number of encores - it was a very late hour before the pro- ' gramme was completed. The Mayor (Mr C. A. Pownall) presided. The entertainment was commenced by an overture, "The Turkish Patrol." Songs were sang by Mrs H. Phillips, Mrs Eouso, Miss Sutherland, and Messrs W. Iggulden, H Hall, A. iNicol, 11. langdon and E, Kendall, most of whom received encores. Mr Hall was a host in himself and kept the audience fairly convulsed by bis character and comio recitations, receiving most imperative oncorcs, from tho audience, who like Oliver Twist f "wanted more." A violin solo by Miss E. McKcnzio was very nicely execute d. This young lady possesses a great deal of talent, and played with wonderful accuracy for ono so young, and was most deservedly encored. A violin trio by the McKenzio family was also well received. Miss Williams' pupils executed k tlio" Fan Dance " very gracefully. A topical sketch, "Later On," by "The Army," was very amusing. Tho entertainment was brought to a close by the Orchcsta playing "God Save the Queen." Mrs McKenzie and Mr Von Kiesenberg !wcre accompanyists for the various items, Tho piano used for the occasion was kindly lent by Mr J. Candy, whilo Messrs Hounslow and Hoar provided tbo furnishings, Mr A. Vile acted as * Secretary and Mr B. P. Ginders as Treasurer, and much credit is duo to them for tho way in which the affair was worked up,
