Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs that the Government will concede another shilling in the fares of teachers and parents in connection with the school excursion to the Industrial Exhibition, but nothing more. Two deaths of well-known Wellington residents are recorded. Mr W, H. Holmes, fcr many years master of the Te Aro school, died at Island Bay on Thursday night, and Mr J. T. Steele, the well-known draper expired athis residence in the city yesterday morning,

It has been remarked that there has not been a tresh in the Waipoua during the past winter, The water has, of course, risen occasionally, but the river could always have been forded by pedestrians. Two splendid bullocks, were shown in Messrs Wickerson and Wagland's shop yesterday. One of them turned the scale at 12 cwt, and the other at 10 cwt, yet neither was as fat as show beef generally is. We'understandthatit is not intended to hold an inquiry into the circumstances under which the fire at' the Waipoua mills originated on Tuesday morning. It is stated that the Insuranco Companies contemplate raising the premium on saw-, mill property to £5 per cent. ; Messrs Foley and Berkley, assisted by the Misses Beaufort and-Sutherland, will give one of their very enjoyable intertainments at the Theatre Royal this evening, A very choice programme, including "Love's Stratagem," "Drawing room Echoes," and an olio, has been prepared, and those who patronise them should therefore have good value for the money they spend in the admission fee. A suicide, probably unprecedented in its method, was lately committed at Cattaro, Dalinatia. An Austrian artillery officer named Berghatnmer shot himself with an old-fashioned muzzle-loading camion, He rammed down a charge of powder and a shell, fired the touch-hole with a match tied to a stick, and was blown to pieces. There wasn't enough left to hold an inquest on, Signor Otto Hug, prior to his departure to a neighboring colony, is about to pay a farewell visit to the Wairarapa, where he has many friends, who, on the occasion of his former visits, have been indebted to his wonderful medical clairvoyant powers, The Signor will be in Masterton on Monday next, in Carterton oil Wednesday, in Greytown on Thursday, and in Featherston on Friday. We have had frequent opportunities in the past of testing the accuracy of the marvellous diagnoses of Signor Hug, and we do not hesitate to recommend any person suffering from symptoms which do not yield to ordinary medical prescriptions to interview the Signor. In the Exhibition there is one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr Field, of Dunedin. The whole of the exhibit has been purchased by Mr Thorburn, the clothier, of Willis-street.
