SHIPPING BEES TO NEW ZEALAND.
(From San Francisco Bulletin). Last Saturday (15th December), four colonies of bees from the apiary of N, Levering, LoB Anglos, were shipped for New Zealand on the steamship Australia. ' Each colony is accompanied by an Italian queen, including one that took the prize at the recent Fair, .The boxes in which the bees make their long journey are about two feet in length by a foot and a half in hoight and breadth. Each one is supplied with an attachment,on one side containiim a sponge, and bearing directions that fresh water shall be applied 1 to it every day. This furnishes the beo3 theit , drink and keeps the atmosphere within the hive sufficiently humid. The matter of ventilation is provided by.moans of several auger holes in the bottom of the hive, and an aperture in the top, fitted with with wire cloth, and closing with a slide so that the current [of air may be regulated to suit the weather."At one end of the hive there is arranged a compartment covered externally with wire cloth) where the bees may go for an airing should it become warm'inside.
