CARTERTON RIFLE VOLUNTEER SOIREE.
The show day of the Wairarapa Pastoral Society and a wet day will become pretty well synonymous terms in the Valley, for though the 19th was not quite so bad as the day that witnessed the first exhibition of stock on the Carterton show grounds, there was still quite enough rain somewhat to mar the entire enjoyment of the day, while the night turned out a thorough drencher. But leaving to one better versed in such affiiirs to give you full details of the show, I will confine myself to the festivities that brought the day's proceedings to a close—the Carterton Rifle Volunteer soiree. As soon as drill was over on Monday evening, about a dozen of the corps, with the aid of ferns, bushes, flowers, and flags that had been kindly forwarded from Wellington, converted the Public Hall from its customary barn-like appearance into a pretty and tasty ball room, Soon after eight the votaries of terpsichore began to assemble. Dancing was started to the music of the band in full force shortly before nine, and by ten o'clock there must have been fully two hundred in the Hall, which was comfortably full, but not over-crowded, as would have been the . case if many more had been present. Supper took place about 11.30, and it was five o'clock in the morning before the most successful dance that has ever taken place in Carterton was brought to a close. Among those present were Lieutenants Wyllie, Porter, and Cameron, and representatives from the Masterton and Greytown corps. Business engagements unfortunately detained Captained Ruck and Lieutenant Donald from being present, Financially the dance will be a great benefit to the corps, and will enable it to clear off altogether, or nearly so, the debt that was outstanding on the purchase of instruments for the band.
