[froji otjk own* correspondent] September 22. The Sub-Committee of the Pastoral Society met on Saturday at tlieir office. Present: Messrs Moore (chairman), H. Braithivaito, W. Booth, jun., H. McMaster, L. Nix, B. Boys, W. C. Buchanan, and J. Drummond. After the confirmation of the minutes of the preceding meeting, a letter was read from the Wanganui Society concurring in a uniform rate of charges for travelling expenses of judges being adopted as suggested, and 'fixing the date of their show for the 6th November. Mr Moore handed in the sum of £ll Is, being debenture of Messrs Moore & Krull, and subscription from Mr J. Payton £1 Is. The Bank account was stated to be as follows: No. 1 account, overdraft, £lsl 5s 6d; No. 2 account, debenture cr., £2 Os lOd ; No. 3 account, general cr., £32 19s 3d; the amount hitherto standing to credit of debenture account having been applied in reduction of overdraft. It was resolved to distribute the programmes printed as follows: R. Wakelin 800, to be issued with the Standard, date to be arranged; J. Payton & Co. 250; balance to be distributed among subscribers, Wanganui, Hutt, and Hawke's Bay Societies, and the hotels in the Wellington District. With regard to leasing the show ground Messrs Buchanan and McMaster were deputed to see Mr Blonquist, a tenderer, before the matter was settled, The Secretary was directed, after consultation with the late secretary, to get the requisite number of show cards printed. The Secretary was further instructed to write to Mr F. H. Wood to postpone Lis sale on Saturday, that day being fixed for the, horse parade. The Committee then adjourned.
A serious accident occurred to one of Mr Bennett's boys on Sunday, his leg being broken between the ankle and knee. The limb has been set, and probably the sufferer's youth and good health will soon set him on his legs again; but I think the circumstances under which the accident occurred should be made public and receive more than a mere passing notice. It appears that some thirty or forty people assembled on the Hurunuiorangi Flat on Sunday to witness a horserace, and I hear that this is not the first occasion that|
■ similar events have come offin the same locality on the same day of the week; the riders were boys, mere children, in fact, and as in young Bennett's case, as from the names I have hoard mentioned, doubtless the others who took part in the proceedings were present unknown to, and contrary to the wishes of their parents. The boys are not so much to blame as those older than themielves who employed them. There is, I believe an Imperial Statute still in force prohibiting persons from taking part in such sports on the Sabbath, and making all participating liable to fine, and I think this is a case that should be taken up by thepolK|at j once, Dangerous as racing ducted under proper rules and r~ Bjo ns and under the surveillance of officers, amateur performances such as I have referred to, are doubly risky.
