MASTERTON INSTITUTE.

The Committee met at the Institute on Tuesday, Augujfc 26th. Present-Messrs Feist (Chairman), Bennett, McGregor, Vile. Renall, and Hales, Mr Hales explained that the Hon Secretary was unable to attend and had requested him to take the minutes.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Letters were read from the Secretary oi the Hospital Committee, thanking the Institute Committee for the offer of papers and the use of room, and stating that the Illustrated papers would be duly sent for and filed.—From the City Council appointing Mr J. C. Boddington to fill a vacancy on the Committee, subject to the approval of same- On the motion of Mr Bennett, the appointment was confirmed. Mr Hales reported that the books authorised at the last meeting of Committee were in the hands of the Custodian, but had not yet been added to the Library ; that they had cost some £7 12s, mid the sub-committee proposed expending the balance of the £ls voted in monthly parcels of new works,

Mr Renall reported that the sub-com-mittee appointed for the purpose of fencing the Institute grounds, had selected material and would proceed with the fence as soon as possible. The Chairman drew attentiou to the fact that the walls of the Institute had been disfigured by driving nails, etc, and in one place burnt, It was decided that the Custodian be requested to see that this be avoided in the future,

In answer to Mr Vile, the Chairman stated that the Institute had received no monies from the Borough Council on account of rates, and that'he understood it was owing to the fact of the rates not having been collected.

It was decided that before next meeting .inquiries should be made with a viewto ascertaining cost of furnishing the h'all with lamps, chains, etc.
