The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 1879.

Mr Bunny and Mr Carter have both been cornered a littlo to declare to which party they belonged, and to take the electors into their confidence on the question which Parliament had remitted to the country. At Greytown Mr Bunny spoke out boldly and said he would not turn his coat, but would vote for the Ministerial side, We respect Mr Bunny for this declaration, and only regret that Mr Cartey did not, when pressed in a similar manner, make opan confession instead of dodging round plain straightforward ques tions, so that his mind on the subject is still a mystery to the electors, Mr Bunny might have been forgiven for reticence. Fourteen years of continuous service covers a multitude of sins, and though differing from Mr Bunny on party questions, we would not for one moment be so ungrateful as to decry his long and valuable services to the district. Mr Carter, too, is putting in a little bill for services rendered a generation back, but the statute of limitations is clearly against him, and if any claim of this kind is to be met and honored, it is plain that Mr Bunny's must take precedence over Mr Carter's. The, Liberal party is divided into head and tail, The personal friends of the Premier form the head, and the Liberal party the tail. "We fancy Mr Carter belongs to the head and Mr Bunny to the tail division, The electors, however, have a distinct right to tell candidates to stick to their party, and not come saying, " It's all the fault of the head, which the tail is going to remove;" or " It's the tail that is to blame, because it won't wag when the head nods, and we will have a new tail next session." The electors will not take the Liberal party piecemeal, and the candidates of it must come at last, as they ought to have done at first, as units of the entire animal, and not try to hoodwink the electors as Headites and Tailites, so that they may have a back door which, in the event of their being returned, will enable them to escape from all the election pledges they may have been supposed to have given, We have great faith in Mr Carter as a public man, and we think those who have heard his addresses will endorse the favorable opinion we have previously expressed ot him, and it is with much regret we notice him in the present contest running a "wee bit" crooked. We would much sooner see him follow Mr Bunny's example and run up his flag, instead of keeping it carefully stowed away in the recesses of an impenetrable pocket.
