No. 6 WARD.
To the Editor of the Wairakafa Daily. Sir,—ln looking over the account of the meeting at Wairongo, 011 the 27th May lust, 1 find the report lias been rather cleverly " got up " in a way which tends to mislead the public. The last two resolutions express the conclusions arrived by the majority of the ratepayers present, and the former of these, appointing a Committee to arrange for inspection of the whole Ward with regard to works most requisite, etc,, was understood to cancel all ibe other resolutions having relation to proposed applications to the Road Board. The report brings before the public a long list of requirements north of Kaiwhata i£ver; where (with the exception of £SO) all the expenditure has been carried on, hitherto, since the formation of the Road Board. Mr Meredith, sen., in his letter on this subject, states that all the traffic is from south to north ; but if a fair share of our rates were spent in the southern end of the Ward, it wo.uld open up an excellent road, both for Jio.rse traffic and the removal of fat stock, viaPahauato Featherston, which would be used by many ratepayers in the district who are now obliged to take a long circuit round by W]i<areama and Masterton. While oil the subject of Mr Meredith soil's letter, and as I am aware that he is always anxious to glean information connected with this district, I beg to correct a slight error lie has fallen into, (through ignorance no doubt). Mr Meredith would appear to consider that Uriti is the only available shipping place within reach of a large proportion of ,the ratepayers. A3 a matter of fact there is ,p excellent anchorage and boat harbour a few miles south of Uriti, equal if not superior to it, where I, ;md others,'have shipped wool; for several years, within an average dis-' tance of four miles from the residences of five out of the eight ratepayers living north of Kaiwhata, (Mr Meredith is in error in saying there are twelve ratepayers to the north side of Kaiwhata ; there arc only eight entitled to yote), I do not think Mr Meredith has been more j than a mile to the south of Kaiwhata for 1 some twenty years, so he is hardly in a ; position to give much reliable information as regards the southern end of the Ward. The fact that the road through the northern end lies over rough and broken country, is due, principally, I believe, to the Engineer who originally laid off the line having paid undue regard to the re presentations of the owner of the property through which it runs. I regret that 51)' Moore has resigned, but the very uncoui'tsous treatment he received from a portion of the ratepayers left him no alternative. Throughout his custodianship he has, at considerable loss of time and trouble, devoted himself to forwarding the interests of the district in a straightforward and conscientious manner, Trusting his successor will perform his duty as impartially,—l am., &c., Fked. Mooke. Glenburn, June 22,1879.
