The Soiree of the Greytown Horticultural Society 011 Friday next may be expected to be, as the Greytown Soirees usually are, a great success. We call attention to the programme of the Sports published in another column by the Forester's of Carterton, in connection with their fete on the Queen's Birthday. Mr Bloxham, Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, left Mastorton yesterday. He has been staying fit the office here for some clays past adjusting, so people say, the Bank screw. Messrs lorns & Fergusson have been instructed by the Trustees in the estate of Jenson and Hadley to sell the whole of their stock-in-trade and effects on the 23rd instant. The sale will be held in the store of H. Bentley & Co., and will be without reserve, The election of Auditors for the Borough of Masterton is announced, as the term of office of Messrs Fergusson & lorns, the present holders of the appointment, has expired. The nomination takes place on Monday next. It was thought by some that the office of Messrs Dalrymple & Co. would have been stormed as soon as the fact transpired that they had £20,000 to lend at 10 per cent. The demand for money, however, is not so urgent as is represented. Nevertheless on Saturday last the firm reported placing £2,°°° out of tlie amount. We clip the following from an exchange believing it to bo strictly unreliable " Belfast Billy " is a Marton larrikin, and it is needless to add, an " unspeakable" young ruffian. He displayed his rowdyism at the sports' held there, was "run in," brought before the Bench, and fined in the aggregate of £ll. Mr Wardell, R.M., is a very terror to evil-doers,

Clayson's ball is fixed for the 23rd instant. Tenders invited for tho erection of from 80 to 100 chains of wire fencing by Mr Oockburn,

The newest insolvent is ' Deveril,' the Wellington photographer. His creditors will, we trust, do more than " secure the shadow ero the substance fades." F. H. Wood and Co.'s. sale on Saturday was numerously attended, and the prices realised satisfactory. Mr Watson's bakery business did not find a purchaser who would venture beyond a very small price, and was consequently withdrawn. The new bell of tlio Masterton Eire Brigade was rung for the first time yesterday, The volume of sound proved quite equal to the expectation of the public. Wo heard it ourselves a mile away, and tlio sound at that distanco was sufficient to arrest the attention.

The Football Club at Greytown on Saturday last inaugurated the season by a scratch match, which was not so very well attended as might have been expected, but those on the ground practised for about an hour in a very spirited manner. We believe that on the Queen s Birthday another scratch match will be played, after which it is the intention of the Club to challenge other Clubs.

A meeting of tho Masterton Rifles will be held in' the Town Hall on Monday next for the purpose of electing officers and swearing in members. We would suggest that the appointment of a captain should remain in abeyance for a short period, as the experience of a few months drilling would be valuable in determining which Is the most eligible member for that office.

A bootblack was seen at tlio Maori meeting the other day polishing le Kooti's. boots. One of the numerous correspondents at Te ICopua says that a halfcaste, who is a very intelligent fellow, started a bootblack's stall at the entrance to the Ngatimaniopoto camp, and made a small harvest of sixpences. After this we no longer wonder at the presence of the Bank officials amongst our dusky friends,

We copy tho following from the Government Gazette: —Defence Office, Wellington, 14th May, 1879.—His Excellency the Governor lias been pleased to accept tho services of the undermentioned Volunteer Corps: Tho Masterton Rifle Volunteers. Date of acceptance, 4th April, 1879. Tho Carterton Rifle Volunteers, Date of acceptance, 14th April, 1879. G. S. Wiiitmore.

Wedirect attention to an alteration in tho date of Clayson's Loyal Ball, instead of taking place on the evening of the 24th, it will be held on the evening previous, viz., Friday, the 23rd. This alteration will' no doubt, be appreciated, as Saturday, being a holiday, the dancers will be able to take a rest after their exertions. The fact of the affair being under the supervision of Mr J. Clayson should be a sufficient guarantee for its success.

Yesterday morning the staiting of the couches was viewed with some interest by the public. At 11 a.m. Pat Cookery appeared with a team of four (half Wood, and the other half oats) attached to a Cobb & Co. The horses wero decorated with green ribbon, but the absence of that color about the driver was remarked. Mr Cookery having secured a good load, sailed away in front of the " Yellow bus," which was also well patronised by passengers, Nor did 'lke,' who brought up the rear with the mail, go away empty. Many passengers apparently preferred going slow and steady with him to trying either new drivers or now vehicles,

The following from the New Zealaudcr should be taken cum tpwo stdin: Ihe prospects of payable gold being found on the Wairarapa side of the Tararun ranges appear to be steadily improving. The latest news is to the effect that two settlers who visited a quartz reef near the source of the Waingawa river, in which they had on a previous occasion, found indications of copper, had no difficulty in getting the color from alluvial stud taken fiom the bed of a small stream which runs over the reef, although neither of them knew anything of the process of washing. _ Mr Williams, who is an experienced miner, left town for Masterton on Saturday, for the purpose of examining the reef, and should his report prove favorable, steps will be taken to turn it to the best account. A prospecting party has gone up the Ruamahunga river, where several quartz reefs are known to exist, while another is about to be despatched by a small company which has been lately formed. • The Royal plate at Windsor (says Truth) is reported to be worth L 1,800,000. It includes a gold service ordered by George IV., which will dine 140 persons, and the same monarch added to the collection one of the finest wine-coolers in the world, a shield formed of snuff-boxes worth L9OOO, and 30 dozen plates worth LIO,OOO. There are also a variety of pieces brought from abroad and from India; the latter include a peacock of precious stones of every kind, worth L 30,000, .and Tippoo's footstool, a tiger's head with crystal teeth, and a solid ingot of gold for his tongue.

The wilful murder of helpless children—or " infanticide," as it is euphoniously termed—seems to be now carried on to such an extent and with such impunity (remarks an English paper) that the question may almost be raised whether, on the ground of humanity, it might not be as well to legalise the destruction of superfluous babes, and ensure by a system of official inspection their removal from ex istence with as little suffering as possible. This step would also enable arrangements to be made for the decent disposal of their remains, and render unnecessary the objectionable practice which now prevails of depositing their bodies as luggage at railway stations.
