MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of the Board was held on Saturdoy last.

Present—Messrs Bennett (chairman), Moun, Buchanan, Minchin, and Chamberlain.

The minutes of the previous meeting were rend and confirmed. °

The following correspondence was also read: letter from George Duncan, requesting that a road might be laid oft' to his property-situated on the western side of Messrs Holmes and Matiliiwi. One from J. T. Evans, requesting the Board' to have the bush fallen on the road adjoining his property. One from Messrs Rutherford and Gibson, forwarding account for bush falling in No. 1 Ward. One from H. Marrils ?s to the erection of a whare on the Forty Mile Bush-road. And, also, one requesting permission to employ a horse and cart to draw materials for repairing the breast work for a cutting near Woodville, and as to repairing of the punt at the ferry there. One from Treasurer of West County, asking to be furnished with quarterly statements of the expense of repairing the main 'road and also one forwarding resolution passed by the Council relative to the erection oi a wharo for Mr Palmer. One .from Colonial Secretary forwarding a copy of a petition addressed to His Excellency the Governor by rate payors in No G Ward, praying that Hie district thereon described might be proclaimed a new Highway District to he called the Whareiuna District and also one onulosing copy of a letter from the Rev. J. C, Andrew, with reference to the petition for the new district.

Tenders for the erection of G7 chains of new fencing, and the removal and roercction of 22 chains on the Opaki, were received from the following persons Charles Lennox, erecting new fence, £1 Js pel" chain ; removing and erecting old one, 8s; H. Bennett, jun., 24s and 10s pur chain; J. W. Tankersley, 23s and 10s. One from James Colway. One from 11. T Browne, for tho laying off about 12 miles of road in the Te Witi and Tiipurupuru Blocks, at £1 15s per mile.

The Engineer's report ivas given in and read.

Mr Donovan waited on the Board, and 1 requested that a line of road might be laid off from the main road to his property in the Rangituimui Block. Mr Duncan also attended with reference to the road applied for by letter of this day's date.

Messrs Hood, Millar, and Chapman also attended with rcfe.renco the proposed line of road in No. 1 Ward, and urged the Board to adopt the one laid off by Mr Anderson a considerable time ago. The following resolutions were then passed,

That as soon as the Engineer can spare the time he attend to the application of Messrs Donovan and Duncan.

That Mr McKenzie be instructed to attend to the work applied for by Mr Manns.

That the clerk he instructed to write to the Castle Point Board, with reference to the adoption of a line of road qn the Upper Taueru-road, a portion (if which has' been survcyecf by Mr Anderson, Rangituma 12 miles of main block, ■ Thfit the plans prepared by Mr Bremnpr for the deviation of the line of road at Kaumingi be adopted. ; That unless under special circumstances the Board would not accept of any road laid off less than one chain wide.

That Mr Evans be. informed ihat. ,the Board cannot''undertake the bush-felling' applied for by him, at present. That consideration of the petition fo* the proclamation of a. .'new Highway District be postponed till next meeting, That the tenders be invited for a four foot cutting on the road leading past Mr Hood's, in No. 1 Ward. \ \ That the tdnder. of Mr for the fencing on the Opaki be' accepted, provided he lodges the usual deposit. That Mr-Brown's tender for survey, of the line of. road in the Tupurupuru and Te Witi bo declined.' That tlie Clerk forward to the Borough Council the accounts due, and request payment.

That a special meeting of the Board be held on Monday, the 7th day of April next, for the purpose of striking a rate of one shilling in the £, on property within die district.
