SWIMMING.

WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. The first swimming sports of the new Waimat# High School was held in the Waimate Public Baths yesterday in sunny weather. Though a goodly number of pupils did not take part in the swimming there were good entries in all the events, and some good sport was provided. Jinny promising young swimmers were to be seen in action. Notable among- these were the winners of the championship events: Masters A. Gray and S. Kirkpatrick and Misses B. Marshall and C. Mcßride (seniors), Masters E. Carr, R. Brien and E. Tonkin, and Misses J. McBride, L. Richardson, M. Travers and M. Moir. The organisation and conduct of the sports was excellent, so much so that the thirty-four events (some with heats) were decided in an hour and a half. The credit for the organisation of the function lies chiefly with Mr A. Saw ell, while the various officials earned it to a successful conclusion. The officials were: Starter, Mr L. J. Collins; . check starter, Mr A. Sawell; steward, Mr G. Aitken; judges, Miss Borrie and Mr L. Ensor; timekeepers, Messrs D. Chisholm and L. R. Templeton; judge of diving, Mr Templeton; re-cord-secretary, Miss Robertson. The thanks of the school are due to Messrs Collins and Templeton officers of the Waimate Swimming Club, for the help they rendered in connection with the sports.

It is intended that the sports should be an annual affair; the enthusiasm displayed by the pupils augurs well for future functions. As the fixture beornes more firmly established, it is probable that parents will take a more prominent interest in it.
