The Waimate Advertiser. (Established 1898). Published every evening since 1914. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 1927. THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

A l&st-minute carprise has been sprung on the electors in the shape of a contest for the Mayoral chair Until to-day it had been though', that nomination of the sitting Mayor wc.ild be unopposed, and many burgesses who appreciated the value of Mr Dash’s services io the town were glad of the fact, and satisfied that he should continue to sit at the head of the Council table and guide the thought and effort of the new Council. It is apparent, however, that there is a section of opinion - and just how large or small a s-c--tion it would be difficult to say at the present juncture—which favcur a change of leadership in municipal affairs. There are two aid c to, every question; and while the ‘ Daily Advertiser” has never feared to express approval <>£ policy and methods of the present Council, it :s of course possible that a different policy and different methods may 1 etter satisfy those whose opinion Cillers from that frequently expressed in this journal. That point being granted, it will be appreciated that we cannot, in the interests of fair play, press the merits of on*' candidate to the exclusion of ihvst: of the other, who has no journal to whose columns he may look for editorial support. From to-day until the election is decided therefore, the “Daily Advertiser” will refrain from taking any side in the con t< st. but will leave the issue to the good judgment of the electors, to whom, after all, both gentlemen are wch known. Mr Dash is just concluding a term of service, and Hie annual report of the Council, issued recently, provides much matter for the consideration of electors. Mr Evans has held the office of Mayor twice previously, and we invite Inm to place before the public the points on which his policy rests, in order that electors may have the opportunity of judging for themselves the qualifications of the two candidates. Our columns are at the disposal of both gentlemen, to use freely as they desire for this purpose ; but, as we have stated, we do not- propose to influence the issue cne way or the other. The fight, w« are confident, will be fair; and the ballot box will show whom the bur pesses feel is best fitted for the position of Chief Magistrate.
