THE CITY FATHERS.
Thia year an election will be necessary to choose those whom die burgesses desire to have flie conduct oi municipal affairs in Wainiate, tor more than sufficient candidates to fill the nine chairs at the Coaecil table have oome forward. It is gratifying to be able tv record such a state of affairs, for it shows that the spirit of service to the com munity is not lacking in Waimate Whether all members of the usw Council will feel disposed to re-offei themselves at the clone of their term of office is, however, questionable, foi in these days many are the kicks and few the ha’pence wlfich come the way of the men responsible for collecting and spending :,u-> rates.- The great majority of those who serve the public in local government do so, we are convinced, to the best of their ability.and to the hilt of what they consider to be their duty; but public service is no different from any other activity of 'man in that it is impossible to rlcase everybody, and that in satisfying the requirements of some, erhere are injured, or consider themselves to be so. As far as our new Council is concerned, howeve l- , there is sufficient in number and variety of qualification among the candidates to enable a very satisfactory selection to be made. Some are ex-Councillors, men who have proved their worth ; others there are who, new to any form of 'oca! ! government, nevertheless have in them latent ability which when jhev are put to the test should amply justify the support of those whos-' votes may elect them. As in the case of the Mayoral contest, we do not propose to- force upon the public our opinions as to the suitability or otherwise of the various candidates. When those upon whom our criticisms might fall have no other journal to defend them we believe the fairer method to lie in leaving the electors to decide for themsslvic? who best are the men to carry <,u the Borough's work.
