Butler ran 300 yards in 30 3-ssec, equalling the American (Wefers’s) record. Rose (New Zealand) did the mile in a Limited Handicap, from scratch, in 4min 27 2-ssec. A London policeman (Wiffen), with 65 yards start, won the mile in 4miu 20 l-ssee. Comment is made on Rose’s poor times, whieh fail to compare with his performances in New Zealand, though he has done better here in training than in races. Weightman Smith beat Lord Burleigh in the 120 yards hurdles in 15 2-ssec. Honncr (Australia) won the long jump, 24ft sJin. Steyn (South Africa) was second, 21ft Ilin. BOXING. SYDNEY, June 27. At the Stadium, Jim Williams (American co’aured middleweight) beat Harry Collins in eight rounds, when the referee stopped the match. The American led throughout, inflicting severe punishment, having Collins at his mercy in the last few rounds. TENNIS. SAN FRANCISCO, June 25. Tawara (Japan) defeated Arago(Phillipines) 8-6, 6-1, 8-6 on Friday in the first mntch.of the second rouuJ of the* Davis Cup preliminaries.
