PCT pBXSS ASSOCIATION —COVTBIOnT DUNEDIN, March 24. The the Police Court to-day, before Mr H". M. Bundle, S.M., James Cunningham pleaded guilty to being drunk while in charge of a motor car, and also to procuring liquor while prohibited. Accused on Saturday afternoon had two passengers in his car, and ran into the back part of a tram. The car then shot across into a hedge, file tramcar was damageu to the extent of about £lOO, while the motor ear was also considerably damaged. The Magistrate said that defendant nad been previously convicted for driving at a speed dangerous to the public. A man who drove a motor car while drunk, was extremely fortunate not to be charged with manslaughter. He was a menace to everyone. He was not satisfied that the two young passengers were entirely innocent in the matter. They should have known the driver’s condition. It was not a case for a tine. Defendant would have to suffer some punishment. He would be sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. On the charge or procuring liquor he would be convicted and discharged. WELLINGTON, March 24. The Chief Justice to-day sentenced the following prisoners who pleaded guilty in the Lower Court: — Alfred Allen Street (Wanganui, farmer), false pretences, three years’ probation and ordered to pay back £65 within two years. Sydney Harold Cummings, forgery and uttering at Palmerston North, two years’ probation and to make restitution in two months. Jessie Wilbur Winslow, theft from the dwelling, three years’ reformative detention. Herbert Rex Harrison, attempted arson at Woodville, nine months’ hard labour.
