Press Assn.—By Tei — Copyright. LONDON, May 24. The spread of disease threatens wholesale ruination to the banana plantation in tie northern rivers districts of New South Wales. Many once flourishing plantations are being abandoned. Scientific investigation has so far failed tevolve an effective remedy, the vr. y method of combating it being the teatruction of diseased plants. Amongst those threat* are a number of soldier settlements in which much public money wa< i: zested, while other proposed settlement are held up I rather than invest mo - capital in a threatened industry. Experiments in ithe direction of cheeking the disease have achieved a certain amount of success, but a. permanent remedy is not yet in sight. The cause of the remains a mystery though it is apparently related to the soil conditio ag, as, so far, Queensland and some New South Wales plantations are not seriously affected.
