OBITUARY.

OLD MAORI RESIDENT. There has passed away another of the old Maori residents of the district in the person of Teone Teururaki (Mr Solomon). Some years ago he lived in Waimate and owned property in the Mill Road, but about 30 years ago he removed to Morven, going from there to Glenavy, where he has resided some 20 years. He had enjoyed good health until lately when repeated colds enfeebled his health. He met Ratana, the healer, at Temuka, and afterwards accompanied him to Otago Heads. When there the cold settled on his lungs and he passed peacefully away in Dunedin on Monday last.

His body was brought to Glenavy on Tuesday to the home of his son-in-law, Mr Wesley. The funeral took place from Mr Wesley’s residence on Thursday afternoon and was largely attended by Maoris from as far north as Kaiapoi, no fewer than 50 coming from Temuka aud 17 from as far south as the Bluff.

Rev. Wm. Beckett, of Waimate, conducted impressive services at the house and the grave side. Hymns in Maori were sung “When I survey the Wondrous Cross,” and “When Our Heads are Bowed in Woe.” The remains were interred in the Glenavy Cemetery. Among the mourners were many aged members of the Native race, including Mrs Walker, Teururaki's sister, who is said to be 102 years of age, Mr Davis, of Waimate, who has been with Ratana during the whole of his South Island trip, and Mr Solomon, of Dunedin, and many others, among them a great number of local residents, Maori and pakeha, indicating the great respect in which Mr Solomon was held.
