THE MEAT SUPPLY.
BOARD OF TRADE MOVING. A very important development is contemplated in regard to the meat supply of Christchurch. The movers in the matter are the Board of Trade. The proposal is to provide the meat supply of the city of Christchurch from the Imperial Government stores through the medium of the freezing companies. If this is done, the butchers will receive their supplies at a fixed, unvarying price during the currency of the war, and for three months thereafter. The arrangement will carry with it an obligation on the part of the butchers to sell at fixed retail prices, to be regulated by the Board of Trade. The Christchurch City Council are, very much concerned with the proposal. If the scheme, is givep effect to it will involve the closing up of the city abattoirs, as all the killing will be done by the freezing companies. As might be expected, the master butchers of the. city are considerably excited by the proposal.
