Grand Bazaar.
IN THE HANNATON SCHOOL.
For a long time it has been felt that
a hall was, needed in the Studholme i. and Willowbridge district in which to ,' hold the social functions of the munity. Some little time ago Mr Meyer, seeing there was a chance to . get a subisdy from the Government this year for any Coronation memorial, called a public meeting, and it was decided to erect a Coronation Hall. Application was at once made to the Government and a subsidy promised. Donations were then solicited and a good response obtained. The ladies were then called together .and , they decided to hold a bazaar. Tfcey got to work at once, with the result
J that a splendid bazaar was held in the » Hannaton School on Thursday and Fri- } day last. i On Thursday at 2.45 p.m. the open- [ ing ceremony was performed by Mr i Hart, (Chairman of the County Coun- | cil), who, in a very neat speech, coni gratujated the committee on their enterprise and the ladies on their splendid work, done in so Bhort a period, as was shown by the grand display bn the various stalls. Mr Francis (Mayor of ,Waimate) also spoke and said the committee bad obtained a splendid site near the school and that the work of building had been left to Mr Gillies, of Oamsru, and work would be' commenced in a few days. He thought the committee deserved success in their undertaking and hoped they would get it. Mr Hart then declared the sale open and trusted no one would go home with money in their pockets. Mr fl. Meyer moved a vote of thanks to Messrs Hart and Francis, and this baing carried the sale started. A good number were present and a very pleasant time was spent till 11-p.m. On Friday the sale opened at 3 p.m., LuL there were not a great many present till the evening, when the room was again filled and a brisk business done. All goods left on the stalls after 9.30 were sold by auction and brought fair prices. Competitions of various descriptions tcok place each evening, and anyone who wished could pay a visit to the j art gallery. ' On Thursday evening the Waimate Brass Band came out and under the leadership of Mr Wills played selections outside the school in a very • pleasing manner, while at intervals the local orchestra played inside.
