THE CITY OF TIENTSIN.

Tientsin is a large city and river port, on tho right bank of the Pai ho, thirty-four miles from the mouth of the river. It is the port of the oity of Pekin, from which it is distant eighty miles, south-east. The river is generally froren over from aboufc the middle oE December to tho middle of March, and the businaes, at other times earned on by means of boats and junks, is taken up by sledges, -which swarm on the river.. By tha treaty of Tiea-tsin, signed in 1858, the port was declared open, and a British Consulate wa3 established iv 1861. The imports hare an annual value of £400,000 or £500,000, and the exports ara valued at about £1,000,000. In 1899 the population was estimated at a million.
