DARING THIEVES.
"The Imperial dredge was the scene, ;last wsek, of about as daring an attempt at robbery as it is possible to conceive. While the dredge was laid up for a few days to effect some repairs, the thieves seized the opportunity, when no one was about, to make a raid on the gold' vat, and would have got away with the lot, but for the timely appearance on the scene of one of the men employed oa the dredge, just at the time when the scoundrels were Removing the swag. As it was, they succeeded in getting away with a dish of the stuff. But for the appearance of the 'workman the proceeds of five days' work would have been lost to the company. The question arises, What sort of management was it to leave the dredge uuguarded with bo much gold at the mercy of .the lighthngnrei] gentry who are always ho veiling ajboja-t wherever there is a chance of emaking'a rise without working'i'or it. *%, ">,
