In the Magistrate’s Court to-day John Fletcher, Joseph Davis, and Alox lionttio were charged with being, drunk in the main street. John Fletcher was further charged with wilfully breaking a pane of glass valued at £l7, the property of Carl Bowmns. Fletcher was also charged with being found' at night with an article of disguise (a mask) on his poison without lawful excuse. Davis ,and Beattie wore ■ charged with having masks in their possession. Beattie was also charged with being found at night armed with a sword, without assigning any valid or satisfactory reason for being so armed. The charges of drunkenness were taken together and the Magistrate inflicted a flue of 5., each on Fhtcher and Beattie, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. The information against Davis was dismissed. The other charges against all tho accused were taken together, and an additional charge against Alex Beattie of inciting persons to commit an offence. Magistrate Young’s judgment was as follows: “The charge against Beattie for inciting is dismissed, there being no evidence to prove the same, in regard to tho charge against Beattie ot carrying a bayonet, he having given a valid and •satisfactory reason tor having the same in his possession, the information is dismissed. The charge against all three accused of having masks in their possession is more serious. They are all liable to Hirer, months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine. They are convicted and ordered to eomo no for sentence when called upon.” • Regarding the damage to the window, the Magistrate said he was salisged that Fletcher broke the window, hut considering the heavy cost in dam ages Fletcher would he convicted and , ordered to pay the damage, viz., £l7. | Mr. Russeli, counsel for defence, j said he would undertake Hint the | money would he paid forthwith.
