ROSS NEWS.

BOSS ’MEN'S LITERARY AND DEBATING-" CLUB. The usual weekly meeting of the above Club was held in Coronation Hall on Tuesday 13th inst. A fair attendance elf members was recorded. The Bov. Caldwell, vicc-President, occupied the chair in the absence of the President Air. White), who was unable to attend having, been called to Hari Hari on business.

Minutes of previous meeting were, road and confirmed and the report of tlhe Rules 'Committee was received. It was decided to hold future general business meetings on the first Tuesday in the month to enable more time to be given to syllabus subjects.

After the business was finished Mr. Hills presided over the remaining portion of the meeting, this being set apart for prepared readings.

Seven members took part and supplied readings of an interesting char. Fetor. The subjects were varied, as

the following list will show: —Air. Bose, “iHoKv Uncvlo Bodger hung a Picture”; Mr. Smart, ‘‘Earl of' Chatham's speech on ‘The suggested use of Indians in the War with America” Mr. Aloyc, “Whir”; Air. AVilson, “.Slave Traffic” ; Air. Starkey, “ How IH. tSergt. Tom Grey delivered a message to Paddy’s Gaud’s sweetheart”; Mr. Neale, “Independence”; Air. Stephens, “The German hid for tile mastery of the Air.” After the conclusion of prepared readings the Chairman invited any of the members who had not prepared to come forward 'and give some, impromptu. Five members very willingly did so, and these added much, to film success of the evening’s work. Air. AVinclicster, head teacher of the .State School, very kindly consented to give a short criticism on the efforts made. His remarks will prove very beneficial to tho members in the practice of this branch of oloentonary work.

Mr. Winchester pointed out that nearly all tho members road too quickly, and that it was strange most people thought it nccessaiy to alter the whole tone of their voice, when they cnnimcnce to read aloud. He asked the members to notice it was necessary to enter into the feelings of. the writer, therefore it was much easier to read a speech than an article. He considered Mr. Starkey, in tho prepared class, had given Hie best interpretation of subjects read, as he appeared more in Ids element, probably due to the fact that the subject suited him admirably. This undoubtedly will establish Air. Sharkey’s .character as a courier of no mean ability.

‘A hearty vote of thanks to Air. Hills for acting as Chairman closed '•the meeting-. 11 The members arc looking forward to next Tuesday evening when the subject is a debate: “That the granting of the Female Franchise has not conduced hotter Government - of this Dominion,” and it is anticipated quite a lot of useful informaton will '.lie forthcoming.
