HAWKES BAY PATRIOTIC FUND
£13,000 PROMISED AT ONE MEETING. HASTINGS, November 17. A mooting of representatives of patriotic- and kindred societies and subscribers from every centre in Hawkes Ray was held at Hastings this afternoon, tile object being to decide upon a systematic, economical, and intelligent administration'of the numerous patriotic relief funds that hav<> been instituted in Hawkes Ray. Mr. TV. Morrison, chairman of the AVairarapa Central Fund, addressed the meeting, explaining the system adopted at Masterton, the good working of wliieh was proved hy the fact that subscriptions there totalled £7 por head of the population. He pointer! out that local societies wore essential, but no scheme coidd bo perfect without centralisation of funds and a National Executive. The meeting resolved that it is desirable to establish a Central Executive for Hawkes Ray, and a committee was set up for that purpose. The sum of £13,000 was promised at the meeting, the subscribers being : Mr Paul Hunter £3,0(10 Mr. George Hunter ... 1,000 Nelson Bros 1,000 - Afr. T. H. Dowry 5,000 Mr. G. N. Pbarazyn 3,000 Mr. G. Pbarazyn said he was sure that £200.000 could he collected in Hawke’s Rav for the wounded soldiers.
