THE INCOME TAX CASE.

DEFENDANTS CONVICTED,

HEAVY PENALTY IMPOSED

[BT TELEGRAPH—PBR JRBSS ASSOCIATION.]

CHRISTCHURCH, April 25,

Mr Bishop, S.M., delivered his judgment in the income tax case this morning when George Bo wren, Wm. Bowron and George Smith, trading as Bowron Bros., were convicted of making a false return, and evading payment of the Income Tax. They were fined £IOO and costs, and treble the amount of taxation evaded, this amount to be assessed by the Commissioner of Taxes. The Magistrate remarked on the business standing of the firm, its enormous turnover, and the apparent wealth of the partners, and said he would have to impose the utmost penalty allowed by the law.

[As the income tax of which the defendants were charged with having evaded payment totalled about £II,OOO, the Court’s decision will probably mulct them in a penalty to the amount of over £30,000.]
