A BRUTAL ASSAULT. DANNEVIRKE, April 25.—At the Court this morning before Mr McCarthy, S.M., a man named John Crosland was sentenced to six months’ hard labour for striking his wife with an iron poker.
BREACH OF COMPANIES ACT. AUCKLAND, April 25.—At the Police Court to-day, the secretary of the Reliance Gold Mining Company was fined £5, with costs, for failing to file with the Registrar of Companies a copy of the half-yearly report and statement in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act, 1908.
AN EMPLOYER’S COMPLAINT. DUNEDIN, April 22.—The Otago Daily Times publishes a letter from a correspondent, and employer of labour, who makes a complaint by no means unfamiliar against the workers of the Dominion. He alleges that there is a growing tendency on the part of the workers to restrict the output of various industries in which they are employed, and somewhat sweepingly ho declaie.s that it is a well-known fact that they rarely give a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay. “ Competition has been so keen,” he says, “that the profits are reduced to a minimum.” The paper, commenting on the letter, says: “It must be realised that any policy on the part of the workers directed towards the restriction of their output,, would be an extremely shortsighted one.”

WELLINGTON, April 25.—At the final meeting of shareholders of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company to-day, the liquidators reported that shareholders had received £3 10s for every £1 share. Satisfaction was expressed by the shareholders at the result.
NEW PLYMOUTH FIRES. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 25.-A fire broke out about 11.30 on Saturday night in Deare’s bookshop in a block recently purchased by Hallenstem Bros., right in the centre of the town. A high wind was blowing and the fire obtained a good hold, but it was suppressed in twenty minutes. Hallenstein’s insurances are £I3OO on the building and £ISOO on the stock in various offices. Deare’s stock is insured for £I3OO. Reynold’s and Co., bicycle dealers, £100; New Plymouth Club furniture (upstairs) £325. Doare estimates his loss at between £IOOO and £I3OO, and the Club set their loss down at £SO. Reynold’s and Hallensteins stock was damaged by water, but no estimate has yet been framed, but it will probably bo heavy. The damage to the building will bo covered by £2OO or £3OO.
On Friday a farmer named Henderson, of Albert road, lost his cowshed, trap shed and 25 tons of hay by fire He was insured for £IOO in the State Office.
INFANTICIDE. AUCKLAND, April 23.—At an inquest on the body of a newly born, fully developed child found o.n tlie beach at Onchunga, the jury returned a verdict of murder by some persons or persons unknown. railway porter injured. AUCKLAND, April 23,—Frank Goodman, a railway porter, was badly injured this morning during shunting operations. Two wagons were passing on opposite lines and the corner of one struck Goodma*i in the groin, but threw him clear of the rails. He was removed to the hospital.
A MURDER CHARGE. AUCKLAND, - April 23.—At the Police Court Henry James Hansen was charged with attempting to murder his soil at Ngunguru, and he was remanded to appear at Whangarei on April 26th. The acusod’s solicitor stated the injured son was out of danger and asked for bail. The police opposed this, urging that the assault was of a murderous character without any suggestion of drink. Thu application was not pressed. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. GORE, April 22.—Wright, Stephenson and Co’s, large corrugated iron grain store at Kelso was burned to the ground at B'a.m. The cause is a mystery. A rough estimate places the damage between £IO,OOO and £12,000, including the loss of some 10,000 sacks of grain, merchandise, etc. Practically nothing was saved.
