Bishop Magee, in a sermon at Leicester, caused a sensation by expressing his opinion that no Christian Stale which acted in all its relations according to the precepts of Christ's Sermon on the Mount, could retain its independence or existence a week.

The New Zealand loan is quoted at 1£ premium.
The Dock Companies have agreed to abolish middlemen, but themselves pay representatives to superintend the discharge of cargoes, the dockers to appoint and pay gangers out of contract price. The object is for the dockers gradually to secure tbe right to contract direct with the shippers. The alteration involves the docks in an annual loss of £20,000.
A partial strike is expected at Wapping owing to the wharves resisting the Mansion House compromise. The
