AN EXPLANATION.
Wellington, March 7.
i.n consequence of the Post's versiou of the circumsiaucca attending the disappearance of Mr Alex, Reid from the Taupo» Mr Eugene O'Connor writes to the Times
protesting against the conclusion that his loss was premeditated by himself, or that he jumped over in a fit of despondency. Mr O'Connor says that Mr Reid accompanied him in the train from Chriatchureh to Lyttelton, and afterwards in the steamer they had much familiar conversation. Mr Reid was in excellent spirits, and spoke with pleasant anticipation of soou meeting his brother and other relations at Auckland He feels assured that if Mr lit id fell overboard, his death was not his own seeking.
