THE HAMPDEN STREET PUBLIC MEETING.
Sib — It was not my intention to h^vb taken any public notice of Mr Councillor Prosser's remarks mado at the meeting of the Municipal Council, on Friday last, in reference to my connection ■with, this meeting, were it not that the impression conveyed by his observations goes to showthat, although a ratepayer, I am a de^ faulter in the payment of rates due by me as a householder, and having been, during the last few days, much alarmed by rei marks publicly made to this effect, I trust you will give me space through your columns to correct Mr Prosser in the unjust charges he has brought against me. 1 I have been a householder here for about twenty months, true I have paid no mtQS directly to the Collector, but indirectly I have, and I am not aware of a single sixpence being due for rates for any house I have occupied during that term. The fact is I have, and always will, prefer the course usually adopted of paying an increased rental ior any house I may occupy, and make the landlord re* sponsible for all rates and taxes ; this arrangement is alike a protection to landlord and tenant, and far more convenient to both parties, so that I repeat, although directly I may not, indirectly I have paid all rates upon properties of which I have been a tenant ; and the best proof of this assertion is the fact that neither of the rate collectors have never made any claim whatever upon me, which can easily be ascertained by reference to the Town Clerk's books ; thus Mr Prosser has, by his remarks, cast a slur upon me of a more serious character than the one he complains of having been cast upon a member of the Municipal Council. Will you allow me further to set Mr Prosser right in another matter he referred to. I was iiot in the most remote way the mover or instigator of the last meeting of tho residents in Hampdenstroet in reference to the formation of a roadway in that district ; it was initiated, I believe, by Mr M'Guire, of the Globe Hotel. He having accidentally met me upon the Monday preceding, gave me an advertisement convening a public meeting at his house, with a request that I would convoy it to tho Wbßx O04.8? Tw«s
