The river is slightly swollen by the late heavy rains, and the heavy weather outside has caused a considerable sea on the bar, not, however, sufficient to cause any interference to shipping communication. The Charles Edward, being unable to cross the Hokitika bar, has just arrived off our port; she will probably' cross by the evening's tide, and is advortised to sail for Westport and Nelson on Wednesday morning. Tho rivers between here and Hokitika, are reported to be very high, and the coach has not yet arrived. The arrival of your messenger was slightly delayed by the same cause. A good instance of correct judgment with regard the weight of a bullock was lately tested at Hokitika. Mr O'Donnell, a butcher, of this port, being one of a sweepstakes of Ll2, judged the weight of the monster bullock lately exhibited at Hokitika, at only one pound from the actual weight, 15761b5. The Carandini family, awaiting the arrival of the Airedale, in which they take their departure for Wellington, give another concert this evening. A large number of seats are secured. The United States Concert Hall received an addition to their family by the arrival of the celebrated dancer Johnny Burgess, by the Bruce. A special meeting of the fire brigade will be held this evening, a report of which shall appear in my next. No cases were heard at the Court this morning. Mr Kynnersley is shortly expected in Cobden; his visit will be of a public nature. The Hospital at Greymouth being one of the many subjects of interest likely to engage his attention.
