EARLY CLOSING.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE WEST COAST TIMES.
Sib — On behalf of a very hard-worked poi> tion of our community— l allude to tho drapers' assistants — I crave space to appeal to the proprietors of those establishments, to assist by their countenance any movement that may be mado to shorten the present hours of labor. Many of us are members of the Literary Institute, but are detained so kte at business that we have little opportunity to avail ourselves of that advantage ; and after being each day thirteen hours on our feet, can have little inclination for anythiug but rest. Were there absolute necessity for it, perhaps it might be patiently borne ; bufc when purchases can as easily be made before seven o'clock as after that hour, it becomes trying indeed to have to inhale kerosene — often in confined spaces for hours (two at least), which might have been spent in healthful recreation, or improving our minds. And no doubt, for all the business that is done after that hour (Saturdays of course excepted), many would close, but will not while others remain open. I beg, Sir, to ask your powerful aid in our behalf, and do hope that not only will the employers countenance any action which may be taken, but will all be unanimous in the matter. I am) & Cj) An Assistant.
