September 20. The long-pending case of B. B. Nicholson v. the executors in Nicholson's estate came on for hearing at the Supreme Court to-day. Mr Nicholson (the -well known miller) claims certain property left b^-feriT wife at her death, in the b.ands-o"Traecu-tors, and which the said^eSscutors refuse to make over, on aeeeunt of certain liabilities which^'Mr~lTichoison owes to the estate:" The court, after hearing counsel for both, sides, gave a verdict in*" favor of tlio deiendants. It is said that the Fitzroy Iron Mines Company, while sinking their shafts, have come upon a seam of coal. In the Assembly, yesternight, the original motion for raising a loan of L 2,000,000 for railway purposes was re-introduced and carried. Several motions for amendments and adjournments were negatived by large majorities. It lias been excessively close to-day. We shall probably have a thunderstorm before morning. Messrs E. F. Stubbs and Ce. offered the cargo of new teas, ex Fromm, to-day. The sale went off briskly. Generally there is not much business to report, although the markets indicate a healthier tone. Sept. 23. It is said that his Excellency Sir Jolin Young, on his return to England, after being relieved from his duties as Governor of the colony, will seek a seat in the House of Commons. The sentence of death, passed upon Griffin for his connection with the Jinden murders, has been commuted to "penal servitude for life. # Adelaide wheat is worth, from 5s to 5s Gd per bushel. Oaten hay, fi'om Ho Dart Town, is quoted at from L 5 to L 6 per ton. The City of Hobart will be laid up for a short time here, during which time she will undergo a thorough overhauling before resuming her trips between this port and Tlobart Town. September 24. The P. and 0, Company's Li .M. steamer Geelong sailed for Melbourne to-day, at two p.m. ; and the A. S. N, Company's steamer Alexandra will sail with a supplementary mail for the Gselong to-mor-row afternoon. Meisrs Goulston's warehouse (hatters and general outfitters, &c), in Pitt street, took fire last night, and before the fire brigade could get tho flames under, the entiro place was gutted, Tlio stock was insured with the Imperial Company for L3IOO, and with .the Pacific Insurance Company for L2OOO, and the building itself was insured for a further sum of L3OOO. An inquest will be held to ascertain if possible the cause of the fire. Mr Kerrison James, the Bishop's secretary, lias been suspended. It is reported that defalcations havo been discovered to a large extent.
T September 25. in the Assembly, last night, Mr Garrett brought forward his motion in favor M 01 the establishment of a newspaper postage fee. After a lengthy discussion it was negatived on a division by 25 votes to 19. It is blowing hard from the eastward. A small ketch was caught in a squall outside the Heads at noon to-day, was capsized, and then sank. The men on boai'd were drowned. The Magellan Cloud, from the South Seas, reports the murder of the Rev. J. ' Baker, Wesleyan missionary, and eight native teachers, at Fiji, by an unenristianised tribe. Prompt measures will be taken to procure the arresi and punishment of the murderers. The Magellan Cloud hrvs brought the Eev. Mr Baker's wife and family over here. The barque Camilla, of Melbourne, guano laden, bound from Maiden Island to Melbourne, sprang a leak on the 20th. July. She made Tutuila, one of the Navigator Islands, where she was beached, and afterwards became a total wreck. 1 The crew were saved.
